VolkerStevin welcomes students to Preston office for a ‘Bring your child to work day’ experience

We were delighted to welcome George and Alfie to our VolkerStevin Preston office for a ‘bring your child to work day’ experience. Chris Hudson, our Engineering Manager, brought along his son and his classmate to give them an insight into the world of civil engineering. During their visit, they learnt about the vital infrastructure projects VolkerStevin delivers across the UK and the role of a civil engineer on these projects.

Chris discussed with the boys the history of civil engineering, going all the way back to the construction of the pyramids! He talked about the importance of creating irrigation channels from the Nile, to create a place for people to live ahead of the big build. They then learnt about Victorian civil engineers and the building of sewers in London, following cholera outbreaks and the big stink. They went on to learn that the Victorian sewers have now been upgraded to a super sewer, to manage London’s population needs and prevent pollution of the River Thames.

The boys then looked at flood risk management, discussing with Chris the soft and hard types of flood defences and barriers, with a focus on environmental impact and the considerations VolkerStevin give to protect ecology and create habitats. They also talked about hazards associated with construction, to give them an appreciation of the importance of health and safety in the industry.

To finish off the day, Chris took George and Alfie to see the new flood defences we are constructing, on behalf of the Environment Agency in Preston, along the River Ribble at Broadgate to Miller Park.

After a busy day the pair were given some career guidance and advice about possible routes into degrees and apprenticeships.
