VolkerStevin successfully completes Lower Mole project
VolkerStevin recently completed works at the Lower Mole project, on the River Ember, Southwest London. The project, delivered on behalf of the Environment Agency (EA), was contracted to refurbish damaged and aging flood structures that protect approximately 3,000 homes from flood risk and improve eel passes in line with updated regulations.

A total of 12 flood gates were refurbished across three different flood control structures. In addition, the team replaced the tilting gate drive bridges on all three structures and installed two new control panels. The radial gate ropes, used to raise and lower the flood gates, had exceed their lifespan and were therefore replaced. Enhanced security fencing was installed and electrical improvements were made by replacing the wiring and containment on all structures.
Multiple lifting operations were conducted to install stoplogs, dismantle the old gate drive equipment and bridge, and install the new bridge. Additionally, diving operations supported the stoplog installation and the replacement of wire ropes.
Upgrades to the eel passes was also completed, these upgrades will allow the successful migration of eels in the River Ember to continue.
The sites were located within residential and public areas where careful planning of our works enabled high risk activities to be carried out safely and with minimal impact.
Upon completion of the project, the team has prolonged the lifespan and improved the usability of the structures, which can now continue to protect surrounding homes.
James Fuller, Environment Agency Senior Project Manager, said: "As the EA Project Manager, I would like to take a moment to highlight the great work carried out by VolkerStevin on the Lower Mole project.
“As the Principal Contractor, VolkerStevin has successfully fulfilled the contract requirements, delivering an asset that is fit for purpose despite the challenges faced along the way. Their commitment, collaboration, and problem-solving approach ensured that the project was completed to a high standard.
“Furthermore, VolkerStevin worked closely with the EA and our suppliers, demonstrating strong teamwork to deliver an asset that meets the business benefits set out at the start of the project.
“A huge thank you to the entire team for your hard work and dedication during this time—it is truly appreciated."
“This project was a great example of how engineering expertise and collaborative planning can deliver real value to communities. Working with the EA we were able to refurbish critical flood infrastructure and enhance eel migration routes, whilst operating in challenging areas. It’s incredibly rewarding to know that our efforts will help protect thousands of homes and support the local environment for years to come."
