VolkerStevin marks major milestone in Preston & South Ribble Flood Risk Management Scheme

VolkerStevin has successfully completed another key section of the multi-million-pound Preston & South Ribble Flood Risk Management Scheme, a project led by the Environment Agency.

Designed to better protect homes, schools, and businesses along the River Ribble, the scheme also brings lasting improvements to the local environment and community spaces.

The latest works include new flood defences between South End and Miller Garden Apartments, where carriageways and pavements have now been reinstated. These defences feature pre-cast concrete flood wall units topped with sleek glass panels, alongside a new floodgate at Miller Gardens, which recently passed a rigorous ‘wet test’ by the Environment Agency.

Much of this phase is now complete, with flood walls, floodgates, and a new embankment in place. Community enhancements have also been delivered, including the refurbishment of Miller Park’s entrance and the transformation of Broadgate Gardens.

"Completing this latest phase of the Preston & South Ribble Flood Risk Management Scheme is a fantastic achievement for everyone involved. These new defences not only strengthen protection for homes, schools, and businesses along the River Ribble, but also enhance community spaces like Miller Park and Broadgate Gardens. It’s rewarding to see the positive impact this project is already having, and we’re proud to be delivering long-term resilience and environmental improvements for the local community."

Looking ahead, a planning application has been submitted for the next phase of construction in Walton-le-Dale, while the final stage near the New Continental pub is scheduled for completion in summer 2026.

This achievement represents a significant step forward in the ongoing development of the scheme, which will provide long-term flood protection while enhancing the area’s natural and social environment for generations to come.
