Michelham Priory project scores ‘outstanding’ in CCS audit

Our Michelham Priory project has been awarded ‘outstanding’ in its recent Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS) audit, achieving a score of 48/50.

The £1.4m scheme involves replacing the defunct sluice gate on the moat at Michelham Priory, East Sussex. The works include installing a sheet‑piled cofferdam to allow construction of new wingwalls, culvert wall improvements and stoplog channels, before positioning the new fabricated gate. The project also includes wider site enhancements, such as installing a 50‑metre timber retaining wall and planting new trees and hedgerows to strengthen biodiversity and improve the surrounding landscape.

The site received the maximum 15 marks in each of the three core CCS categories:

  • Respect the Community
  • Care for the Environment
  • Value their Workforce

The auditor praised the team’s high standards, excellent presentation of the site and strong communication with stakeholders and visitors to the Priory. They also highlighted the project’s robust environmental controls, carbon‑reduction measures, and ecological improvements, including tree planting, material reuse, and solar‑powered cabins.

In addition, the auditor commended the team’s focus on safety, wellbeing and workforce support, including excellent welfare facilities, mental‑health initiatives and strong competency procedures.

The team has also demonstrated a strong commitment to social value, engaging with young people at Park Mead Primary School, Hailsham Academy and East Sussex College to promote careers in construction, as well as hosting a work placement student undertaking a T‑Level in Construction Management. Wider community initiatives have included donating Easter eggs to Hailsham Food Bank and completing pothole repairs to the access road at Michelham Priory House.

This is a fantastic achievement for the team, especially so early in the construction programme.
