Keel Crossing is open!
We’re proud to share that Keel Crossing, Sunderland’s landmark pedestrian and cyclist crossing is open! Delivered for Sunderland City Council as part of the £600 million Riverside Sunderland regeneration programme, the bridge permanently opened on Saturday 18th October in time to welcome thousands of football fans headed to the Stadium of Light to watch Sunderland AFC take on Wolves.

Ian Cussons, Operations Director at VolkerStevin, said: “It is fantastic to see Keel Crossing open this weekend. We’re proud to have delivered a structure that not only connects communities but also reflects Sunderland’s rich maritime heritage. It’s a landmark project for the city and for VolkerStevin.
“Our project team will be on site a little longer while they complete the final finishing works such as reinstatement work either side of the bridge and preparing for the reopening of the Coast-to-Coast cycleway.”
Councillor Michael Mordey, leader of Sunderland City Council, said: “The opening of the Keel Crossing is a significant moment for Sunderland. It is a spectacular symbol of our city's transformation and ambition.
