Inspiring future engineers in the South East

Our teams in the South East have been engaging with local schools and colleges to help inspire the next generation of engineers.

At Turner Free School, our team spoke with a brilliant group of Year 9 students, introducing them to the exciting world of construction and the diverse work VolkerStevin delivers across the UK. The students asked insightful questions, showing genuine curiosity and enthusiasm. It was a rewarding session that highlighted the impact of early engagement in shaping future career aspirations.

We welcomed students from Haywards Heath College to our Pevensey to Eastbourne Interim Beach Management Programme. Team members from the Environment Agency and VolkerStevin provided a firsthand look at how the beach is managed and protected. The visit offered valuable insights into coastal defence, sediment management, and the engineering work being carried out that will help to sustain the coastline.

“It was a fantastic opportunity for our students to see coastal management in action and understand how engineering and environmental stewardship go hand in hand. A truly valuable experience for our learners.”

The team also joined the East Sussex Careers Hub at their apprenticeship fair, over 560 young people attended the event to explore their future career pathways. We connected with students, showcasing the wide range of opportunities available within the construction industry.

As well as attending careers fairs and hosting school visits, our Leigh Expansion and Rother Tidal Walls East projects recently welcomed two work experience students for week-long placements. Rhys and Dhuvraj spent time shadowing various team members, developing an understanding of the many roles that come together to deliver complex infrastructure projects.

“It was really interesting to see how everything works together. I didn’t realise how many different jobs were involved in a project like this. Everyone was really friendly and explained things well, it’s made me think more about what I might want to do in the future.”
