Former engineers visit Leigh Expansion and Hildenborough Embankment site

Our team working on the Leigh Expansion and Hildenborough Embankment Scheme was delighted to welcome members of the engineering cohort from the Tonbridge University of the Third Age (U3A).

U3A at Leigh.

The former engineers visited site to find out more about the scheme, its purpose and the engineering challenges being tackled by the site team. The group brought a wealth of experience and curiosity, sparking lively discussion throughout the visit.

During a guided tour of the works, the group had the opportunity to observe construction in progress and ask questions about the project, construction methods, and materials being used.

Josh Hawkins, Project Manager, said: “It was great to connect with people who’ve worked in the industry and see how their experiences compare to modern practices.

“We had some fantastic conversations, especially about how much has changed over the years, from PPE standards to health and safety, and even the technology we now rely on.”

It was inspiring to see the group’s in-depth understanding of the local flooding issues and the importance of long-term flood resilience for the community. Their insights and interest were a real reminder of the value of lifelong learning and professional legacy. Visits like this are a fantastic way to share knowledge, celebrate engineering across generations, and showcase the progress being made to protect local people and property.
