Kendal Flood Risk Management Scheme

Early careers visit to Kendal Flood Risk Management Scheme showcases engineering excellence

We were delighted to recently support an early careers site visit to the Kendal Flood Risk Management Scheme, organised by the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) and initiated by Emelia Barker, Site Engineer.

The visit brought together early career civil engineers to gain a first-hand understanding of the challenges and opportunities involved in delivering a major infrastructure project within a historic and active urban environment.

A highlight of the day was an insightful presentation delivered by Senior Project Manager, Richard Birchall, Site Agent Darren Coleman, the Environment Agency, and designers from WSP. The session explored the complexities of the scheme, including the integration of flood defence systems, the demands of intricate construction phasing, and the importance of effective stakeholder engagement throughout the project lifecycle.

Attendees benefited from valuable expertise and practical insight into how careful planning and collaboration are essential to balancing engineering innovation with environmental considerations and community needs.

The subsequent site tour brought these concepts to life, demonstrating how the Kendal Flood Risk Management Scheme successfully aligns technical excellence with sustainability and social responsibility in practice.

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to all contributors for sharing their knowledge and supporting the development of the next generation of civil engineers.
