Major milestone achieved with the installation of flood pumping system at Kendal

A significant step forward has been achieved at the Kendal Flood Risk Management Scheme with the successful installation of three large-scale pumps, marking a key milestone in strengthening local flood resilience.

Each pump weighs approximately 4 tonnes and measures 2.7 metres high by 2.6 metres wide, making this a highly complex engineering operation. The pumps have been carefully installed within a wet well measuring 5.5 metres deep and 9 metres in diameter, requiring precise planning, coordination and execution throughout.

Designed to operate during flood conditions, the pumps will play a vital role in managing water levels by transferring excess flow into the river. Previously, water would back up along the beck during periods of heavy rainfall, leading to flooding for nearby residents. This new system provides a robust and reliable solution to help mitigate that risk and better protect the community.

The installation presented a number of technical and logistical challenges, from working within confined spaces to coordinating heavy lifting operations. The project team successfully adapted to real-time conditions on site, demonstrating strong problem-solving skills and a high level of engineering expertise.

This achievement reflects not only the quality of workmanship delivered, but also the collaborative effort of all those involved. It stands as a great example of effective teamwork and technical excellence in delivering essential infrastructure.
