Breaking barriers: VolkerStevin welcomes Mindflow to talk Mental Health across North West sites
At VolkerStevin, we recently had the privilege of hosting Mindflow, a pioneering charity founded by Causeway Technologies, that blends football and mental health advocacy, across several of our North West projects. Their mission, “Talk football, talk mental health,” brought powerful conversations to our teams, helping to break down stigma and encourage openness in an industry where mental health challenges are often hidden.
Mindflow’s sessions featured Match-Up ambassadors, former professional footballers who shared deeply personal stories of their own mental health battles. These weren’t just talks; they were moments of connection, vulnerability, and strength. Through honest dialogue, they helped our teams reflect, relate, and support one another.
We welcomed football legends including Paul Lake, David White, Trevor Steven, and Paul Stewart. Their candid accounts of life on and off the pitch covering the highs, the lows, and the mental health struggles in between, left a lasting impact. The sessions sparked meaningful conversations and reinforced the importance of checking in with those around us.
“These sessions were a powerful reminder of why it’s important to pause, take time out and create the right environment and space for honest conversations. Mindflow helped our teams connect through shared experiences, breaking down stigma and reinforcing our commitment to care and teamwork. It’s exactly the kind of environment we strive to build every day.”

“It’s been fantastic working with VolkerStevin. Their commitment to mental health is clear and seeing their teams engage so openly shows how powerful these conversations can be. Together, we’re helping to break down barriers and build safer, more supportive workplaces.”

Why it matters
The statistics in our sector are sobering:
- 1 in 4 construction workers contemplate suicide
- 2 construction workers take their own life every day
- Construction workers are 3x more likely to die by suicide than the average UK male
That’s why initiatives like Mindflow are so vital—and why VolkerStevin remains committed to creating safe spaces for these conversations.
We’re proud to have been part of Mindflow’s journey and look forward to welcoming them to more sites in the future.
