Appleby pupils bring riverside to life with help from VolkerStevin and the Environment Agency
The riverside in Appleby has a new burst of colour and creativity thanks to local Year Six pupils from Appleby Primary School with the help of VolkerStevin and the Environment Agency.
The pupils recently helped install the final pieces of a vibrant outdoor art display along the River Eden, where VolkerStevin is currently delivering key works on the Appleby Flood Risk Management Scheme on behalf of the Environment Agency. With the support of VolkerStevin and the Environment Agency, the children created artwork inspired by the wildlife they’ve observed along the river.
More than 60 pieces of hand-painted artwork now brighten up the fencing around the King Georges Field playarea and construction compound, bringing a splash of colour to the area while celebrating the biodiversity of the River Eden. The children’s colourful designs reflect their own interpretations of local wildlife – blending creativity with environmental awareness.
VolkerStevin played a hands-on role in the project, donating art materials to the school and helping safely install the finished artwork. Michael Robinson, VolkerStevin General Foreman on the Appleby Flood Scheme, sealed each piece to protect it from the weather and used biodegradable string for a sustainable installation.
“It’s been fantastic to involve the children in a project that connects them to their local environment in such a creative way. Their artwork has really transformed the compound and riverside areas – bringing colour, energy and a real sense of community to spaces that are usually associated with construction. It’s a great reminder of why we’re here: to protect this town, its people, and its natural beauty for the future.”
John Williamson VolkerStevin Project Manager
Deputy Head and Year Six Teacher, Terry Caygill said: “This has been a wonderful opportunity for the children to create artwork that can be displayed for the whole town to see and enjoy.”
Ross McKeown, Environment Agency Project Manager for Appleby Flood Risk Management Scheme added: “The young artists have created a beautiful collection of pieces, which will be enjoyed by all who walk by the river in Appleby.
“This display celebrates the biodiversity of the River Eden whilst we construct the scheme which will better protect 64 properties and infrastructure from flooding from the river, including road access to homes and businesses.”
Visitors and residents can enjoy the display throughout the summer – a reminder that even amid essential construction works, community, creativity, and conservation can come together in a powerful way.
