VolkerTrenchless Solutions progresses major milestones at Sizewell C

VolkerTrenchless Solutions has achieved a series of significant milestones on the Sizewell C project, a nationally significant infrastructure project on the Suffolk coast. These milestones highlight the strong progress on the Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) landfall works being delivered on behalf of the Civil Works Alliance.

Pilot drill successfully completed

The team recently completed the first HDD landfall, approximately 475m of drilling has been successfully completed which was a major step forward for the project.

Advancements on the Combined Discharge Outlet (CDO) works

Alongside the landfall progress, earlier this year VolkerTrenchless Solutions completed the CDO auger drill. This involved installing a 54m length of 800mm steel casing at a 17-degree entry angle in challenging ground conditions.

Meanwhile, a base plug pour saw 168m³ of concrete placed within the shaft – a significant achievement for the team.

These milestones have been made possible through exceptional collaboration between our project team and our supply chain partners, including VolkerGround Engineering, VolkerMarine Services, Hanab, Kouwenberg, and Active Tunnelling.

What’s next

The team have already moved on to the next stages of the HDD programme, this includes:

  • Mobilising for the next HDD landfall
  • Continuing the fitting out of the shaft, following the recent base plug pour
  • Advancing the marine elements of the works in collaboration with the VolkerStevin marine team.
