VolkerGround Engineering was on site at Stonegate, working on behalf of VolkerFitzpatrick as part of the Southern Renewals Enterprise, installing sheet piles to stabilise an existing rail embankment. The team installed over 400 tonnes of GU27N sheet piles, ranging from 2.5m to 11m in length.
The piles were installed in a king pile arrangement, with structural and dummy pile pairs installed sequentially and secured with 300mm welds on every pile.
All piles were pre-augered using an MPL300 PA50 Movax attachment before being handled, pitched and driven with a Movax SG75V. The team also installed a bespoke waler beam to support the bridging section spanning an existing culvert through the embankment. Following installation, the waler was welded to the piles to provide additional structural support.
All piles were fitted with weep holes to allow free drainage. All works were completed alongside live railway operations under strict safety controls.
