Teston project team host community engagement session

The VolkerStevin team working on Teston Sluice Gates, for the Environment Agency, have recently started work on improvements to the Upper Medway Navigation at Teston Country Park. The team are carrying out these works as part of a larger investment programme to enhance this stretch of the River Medway in Kent.

People stood around a table outside eating pizza.

The key focus of the project is the refurbishment of the deteriorating sluice gate, so that its operation and maintenance costs become a much more efficient and sustainable system.

Members of the VolkerStevin site team, the Environment Agency and sub-contractors Selwood came together to host an engagement session, sharing insight with the local community about the work which is being carried out in their local area. The session was hosted at Teston County Park, outside our site compound, which is situated in the centre of the park.

The stall was busy all afternoon, with people of all ages stopping by to find out more about why and how the work is being carried out. It was great to hear feedback from the local community and the residents were complimentary about the harass fencing panels, commenting on what a good idea they were, “It still feels like a great place to visit, not just a building site”.

The team partnered with a local business, the Hop Pole Inn, who provided pizzas for everyone to enjoy in the sunshine. We gave out frisbees, bubbles, colouring packs and sweets which were a definite hit with the younger visitors!
