Outstanding CCS Score for Soldiers Point team

The team at Soldiers Point recently achieved a brilliant 48/45 in a Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS) audit – a score that includes four bonus points for outstanding best practice and innovation.

The project, carried out on behalf of the Environment Agency, involves the construction of a rock revetment to protect a vulnerable section of flood defence on the Adur River, at the entrance to Shoreham-by-sea harbour in West Sussex.

One best practice point was awarded for the project’s utilisation of setting out via machine control GPS within the excavators. This advanced technology uses GPS sensors to guide the excavators with precision, ensuring tasks like grading, excavation or material placement follow exact design specifications - without relying on manual measures. The Soldiers Point team used this technology to build a rock revetment, enabling operators to place rocks at precise elevations, angles and positions. This not only enhances structural accuracy and durability but also reduces human error, eliminates the need for continuous surveying, speeds up the construction process and improves safety.

The second best practice point was awarded for the use of biodegradable cable ties, which help to reduce single use plastic used on site.

The project was also awarded two innovation points for the use of a container lifter. This allows just two people to lift and transport cargo containers efficiently. When wheels are attached to the lower corners, the container can be towed at speeds of up to 7.5 miles per hour.

Congratulations to the Soldiers Point team, this is an excellent achievement and acknowledgement of the dedication to raise industry standards.
