Kendal Flood Risk Management Scheme achieves an ‘outstanding’ Considerate Constructors Scheme audit score

Our Kendal Flood Risk Management Scheme has achieved an ‘outstanding’ rating in its latest Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS) audit, receiving a perfect score of 100%.

This Environment Agency project is designed to reduce flood risk in Kendal following major flooding events, including Storm Desmond in 2015. The scheme includes the construction of flood walls, embankments and a pumping station, alongside river and drainage improvements to better manage water levels from the River Kent and its tributaries. The project also incorporates environmental enhancements, including the creation of green spaces and natural flood management measures to strengthen resilience and deliver lasting community benefits.

The site achieved full marks across each of the three core CCS categories:

  • Respect the community
  • Care for the environment
  • Value their workforce

The auditor described the project as an “outstanding example of considerate practice within the construction industry” and praised the team’s exceptional commitment to CCS values. The report highlighted the project’s excellent presentation, strong professional standards and effective collaboration between the contractor, client, designers and supply chain partners.

The team was commended for its extensive and well-structured community engagement programme, which includes regular community meetings, tailored newsletters, feedback surveys and ongoing communication with local stakeholders. Particular praise was given to the project’s careers outreach activities, including school visits, careers fairs, mock interviews and work placement opportunities, several of which have led to apprenticeships. The scheme also supports a range of local charities and community organisations, with Kendal Girls and Boys Club selected as its main charity partner this year.

The audit also recognised the project’s strong environmental performance. The team has implemented a comprehensive sustainability strategy, including carbon tracking with independent validation, EV charging facilities, lower-carbon material selection, biodiversity enhancements and habitat creation measures such as bird and bat boxes. Robust environmental controls, including dust and vibration monitoring, ecology surveys and spill-response planning, were also highlighted.

In addition, the auditor praised the project’s commitment to workforce wellbeing, inclusivity and safety. The site provides high-quality welfare facilities, mental health support, flexible working arrangements, extensive training opportunities and a comprehensive equality, diversity and inclusion programme. The report also noted the project's strong team culture, effective communication processes and proactive approach to health and safety management.

This is a fantastic achievement for everyone involved in the Kendal Flood Risk Management Scheme and reflects the team's continued commitment to delivering outstanding outcomes for the community, environment and workforce throughout the life of the project.
