Keel Crossing recognised in NEPO Social Value Impact Report

VolkerStevin is proud to see Keel Crossing featured in NEPO’s latest Social Value Impact Report, which highlights the positive social value delivered across the North East and Tees Valley.

Delivered via NEPO’s Civil Engineering framework on behalf of Sunderland City Council, the Keel Crossing project has created a lasting educational legacy alongside the construction of the new footbridge.

As part of the contract, VolkerStevin worked with Fulwell Junior School over two academic years to deliver a range of activities designed to support curriculum learning and introduce pupils to the world of engineering and construction. In total, more than 360 pupils took part in workshops, classroom sessions and hands-on challenges linked to the project.

In September 2024, two careers’ talks were delivered to pupils, alongside engineering and apprenticeship activity, covering construction careers and employability skills, with pupils even trying on PPE!

This was followed in October 2025 by the creation of a pupil-led Aspirations Gallery, curated by students and showcased during the NEPO Supplier Awards, helping pupils explore future career pathways inspired by the Keel Crossing project.

The activities were designed to be interactive and engaging, using resources such as K’NEX bridge kits to provide real-world engineering experiences. The programme also helped pupils develop a stronger understanding of teamwork, problem solving and construction skills.

Feedback from Fulwell Junior School demonstrates the value of the initiative:

“Not only have we been able to weave engineering through our curriculum learning, but we have also been able to show our children what Sunderland has to offer as part of their futures.”

Nicola Dryden Assistant Headteacher, Fulwell Junior School

The inclusion of Keel Crossing within NEPO’s Social Value Impact Report reinforces VolkerStevin’s commitment to delivering meaningful social value through our projects, ensuring benefits are felt long after construction is complete.

It is great to see the project recognised by NEPO as an example of how collaboration through framework delivery can create lasting impact for local communities.
