Two VolkerStevin projects shortlisted for national Constructing Excellence awards

The Low Crosby Flood Risk Management Scheme and Mode Wheel Sluice Gate No.4 Replacement project have been shortlisted as finalists in the national Constructing Excellence awards, following success at the regional North West awards earlier this year.

The national awards bring together all the regional finalists to celebrate excellence in the built environment across England and Wales. The regional North West awards were held in July where the Low Crosby Flood Risk Management Scheme won in the sustainability category and Mode Wheel Sluice Gate No.4 Replacement won Civils Project of the Year.

The judges were impressed with both projects and highlighted how the Low Crosby Flood Risk Management Scheme had adopted an entirely innovative nature-based (reprofiling) solution in the lower course of one of England’s largest rivers, the River Eden. This was done to reduce flood risk substantially and sustainably, while avoiding the need to build flood walls, the need to use concrete or steel, and without imposing a high maintenance liability for the client.

Mode Wheel Sluice Gate No.4 Replacement was identified as an outstanding project that showed the best qualities of the region’s civil engineering and construction profession, due to the long-term benefits that the client will gain across the challenging programme of sluice gate replacements along the canal. The team used off-site fabrication approaches to overcome the challenge that the restricted working footprint presented, this resulted in a huge reduction to the health and safety risk on site, reduced costs and an early delivery.

The awards ceremony will be held on Thursday 23 November, in London Marriott Grosvenor Square.
