VolkerStevin completes restoration of a historic reservoir asset at Michelham Priory

Located in East Sussex, the moat surrounding Michelham Priory is classified as a large, raised reservoir under the Reservoirs Act 1975. As a result, the asset must be maintained in line with strict reservoir safety requirements to ensure its continued resilience and the resilience of its associated infrastructure.  

Working within a sensitive and historically significant environment presented several engineering challenges. To safely access the sluice structure, the project team installed a sheet-piled cofferdam using a 100-tonne crawler crane, creating a dry working area within the moat. This enabled the construction of new wingwalls, stoplog channels and working platforms before the installation of the newly fabricated sluice gate. 

Alongside the primary works, a programme of wider structural improvements was delivered across the site. Exposed masonry was carefully repointed, while damaged brickwork was reconstructed where required to preserve and strengthen the existing structures. A new 50-metre timber retaining wall was also installed along the adjacent embankment, providing additional stability and protection to the reservoir asset. 

The scheme incorporated several environmental enhancements designed to leave a lasting positive impact on the surrounding landscape. As part of the landscaping works, 12 native trees and 144 metres of hedgerow were planted, increasing biodiversity, creating new habitats and enhancing the setting of the historic Priory. 

The project was completed safely, on programme and within budget, demonstrating the value of close collaboration between the project team, client and supply chain partners. The high standards maintained throughout construction were recognised by the Considerate Constructors Scheme, with the site achieving 'Outstanding' ratings during its audits in February and July 2026. 

A further legacy benefit has been created through the donation of the temporary compound hardstanding to the Priory. Originally installed to support construction activities, the hardstanding will now provide additional parking capacity for visitors, ensuring the project continues to deliver value beyond the construction phase. 

Community engagement and social value were central to the scheme from the outset. Throughout the delivery, the team supported a range of local initiatives, including donating Easter eggs to a local food bank and primary school, as well as providing children's mental health books to local pupils. Team members also attended careers fairs at nearby schools and colleges, helping to promote opportunities within the construction industry to the next generation. 

The project also delivered valuable educational opportunities, facilitating 350 hours of work experience for a local T-Level student and hosting a one-week placement for a secondary school pupil. 

One of the highlights of the social value programme was the delivery of VolkerStevin's first 'Constructing Change' event in the South East. The initiative welcomed 12 female pupils from Hailsham Academy and aimed to inspire more young women to consider careers in construction and engineering. Participants gained a practical insight into the industry through hands-on activities including surveying with a dumpy level, learning lifting-operation hand signals and taking part in engineering challenges designed to encourage teamwork and problem-solving. 

The completion of the Michelham Priory Reservoir Improvements Scheme represents far more than the replacement of a critical infrastructure asset. The project has strengthened reservoir safety, enhanced a historic site, improved the local environment and delivered meaningful benefits to the wider community, leaving a lasting legacy that will be felt for years to come.
