Littleborough Flood Risk Management Scheme welcomes Rochdale Sixth Form College
Geography staff and students from Rochdale Sixth Form College recently visited the Littleborough Flood Risk Management Scheme (FRMS) for an informative and inspiring educational experience that combined field studies with career development opportunities.
The visit began with environmental assessments around Blackstone Edge Reservoir and Hollingworth Lake, supported by Rochdale Borough Council. The practical fieldwork enabled students to apply their classroom learning to real-world geographical investigations, providing valuable insight into local environmental processes and landscape management.
Following the morning activities, approximately 60 students and staff visited the Littleborough FRMS site, where members of the project team delivered a detailed presentation on the scheme's background, progress and achievements. Students learned how flood risk management schemes are developed and delivered, and the important role they play in protecting local communities, homes and businesses from flooding.
The visit also provided an opportunity to showcase the diverse range of careers available within the construction and infrastructure sectors. Students heard about different routes into the industry, including degree programmes, apprenticeships, work experience placements and internships, helping them understand how subjects such as geography can lead to exciting and rewarding careers.
The feedback from both staff and students was very positive, with attendees describing the experience as informative, engaging and inspiring.
By opening project sites to students and educational groups, the Littleborough Flood Risk Management Scheme continues to support learning, skills development and greater awareness of the vital work being undertaken to build more resilient communities.
