Keel Crossing Wins at the Construction News Awards 2026

VolkerStevin is delighted to announce that the Keel Crossing project has won Project of the Year (£20m - £50m) at the Construction News Awards 2026.

The award recognises the outstanding work delivered by the project team in creating one of Sunderland's most significant new infrastructure assets. Keel Crossing was shortlisted in two categories – Project of the Year (£20m–£50m) and Community Engagement Project of the Year – highlighting both the engineering excellence and social value delivered through the scheme.

The judges praised the project’s outstanding community impact, technical excellence and collaborative delivery approach, commenting:

“Keel Crossing was recognised for its outstanding community impact and long-term value for Sunderland. Judges praised the technical expertise, collaboration and commitment shown throughout delivery. A landmark project that will leave a lasting legacy for the city.”

This award is a testament to the dedication, expertise and collaborative approach demonstrated by everyone involved in the project, from our client and project partners to our supply chain and wider delivery team.

This latest success adds to an impressive year for Keel Crossing, which has already won Infrastructure Project of the Year at the Constructing Excellence North East Awards and Large Project of the Year at the ICE Robert Stephenson Awards, as well as being shortlisted for the Engineering Excellence and Construction Excellence categories at the British Construction & Infrastructure Awards 2026.

We are immensely proud of the project team and the positive impact Keel Crossing is delivering for the local community.

This achievement is something the whole team can be proud of!
