Work is continuing to progress across the Southsea Coastal Scheme, with the new promenade now beginning to take shape along the Speakers Corner to South Parade Pier frontage.
Our team recently installed shutters to form the new promenade, continued work on the pier capping beam and completed extensive backfilling and compaction ahead of the next phase of concrete works. Preparations have also been made for a new vehicle access ramp, helping to improve access to the beach.
The team has also recently installed basalt fibre reinforcement mesh ahead of the next concrete pour on Frontage 5 East. Made from volcanic basalt rock, this innovative material is lightweight, exceptionally strong and highly resistant to corrosion from saltwater, making it ideally suited to the demanding coastal environment. Unlike traditional steel reinforcement, it will not rust, helping to extend the lifespan of the new promenade while reducing CO₂ emissions by more than 60% compared to conventional steel reinforcement.
By combining innovative materials with modern construction techniques, we're delivering coastal defence infrastructure that is resilient, long-lasting and more sustainable, while creating a safer, more accessible and attractive seafront for residents and visitors to enjoy.
