Southsea Coastal Scheme celebrates outstanding CCS audit score

As the UK’s largest local authorityled coastal defence initiative, the Southsea Coastal Scheme spans 4.5km from Old Portsmouth to Eastney. Once complete, it will help protect more than 10,000 homes and 700 businesses from coastal flooding, strengthening the city’s resilience for decades to come. 

This was the CCS’s second visit to Frontage 3, and auditors confirmed that the project continues to uphold exceptional standards across all areas of the CCS Code. The scheme was awarded the maximum 15 marks in each of the three core categories: 

• Respect the Community
• Care for the Environment
• Value Their Workforce 

The audit praised the site leadership team for its extensive efforts to engage with the local community, ensuring residents remain informed and involved throughout construction. The project’s environmental performance was also highlighted, with auditors noting its ISO 14001 accreditation, strong carbon NetZero policy and proactive approach to sustainability. 

Workforce wellbeing and development were recognised as central priorities, with the audit commending the project’s robust health, safety and training culture. 

In addition to the exceptional overall score, the scheme received two CCS best practice points for: 

• Educational resources for schools and the public: A dedicated section of the project website offers downloadable worksheets and learning materials, supporting schools and helping the wider community understand coastal engineering and climate resilience.
• Use of basalt mesh reinforcement: The innovative use of basalt mesh in place of traditional steel reinforcement demonstrates the project’s commitment to sustainable construction and reduced carbon impact.
