The construction project involved the provision of a three-storey office block with associated car parking, external works, services and landscaping. With the added challenges of developing an exemplar building in terms of design and sustainability which would set the standard for regeneration in the area.
VolkerStevin was the design and build contractor for the head office building for client Voluntary Action Rotherham (VAR), a registered charity. VAR supports, develops and promotes the voluntary and community sector in the Rotherham area.
The project team also included designers Monaghans and representatives of the client who worked together to achieve a BREEAM Very Good rating for the building and flexible working spaces and facilities for numerous voluntary organisations with very differing needs, whilst sticking to a constrained budget.
The Constructing Excellence Value category awards recognised projects that have been designed and constructed to achieve maximum benefit for owners and end users and helped them accomplish their goals.
Chris Blenkarn, building business manager at VolkerStevin, said: "The VAR project was a challenging project, but one that showed off our skills for working in project teams that are responsive, fluid and collaborative. We are delighted that Constructing Excellence has recognised our project teams efforts on this scheme.
"Our overall aim for any project is to achieve the goals set by our client and meet their expectations, however high they may be. At VAR we have not only set standards for sustainable construction, but also built a modern and highly accessible space for the local community in a tight timescale and under a constrained budget."
The project team attended an awards dinner at the National Railway Museum in York on 20 June 2008.
