Four VolkerStevin projects have been shortlisted in the Project of the Year award categories at the Construction News Awards 2020.

- Lincolnshire Lakes Flood Defence Scheme (under £20m)
- Victory Jetty (£20-£50m)
- Ipswich Tidal Barrier (£20-£50m)
- Dover Western Docks Revival (over £50m)
Recognising excellence and celebrating projects that have gone above and beyond, the Construction News Awards are now in their 24th year and have become the most prestigious and coveted awards in the industry.
VolkerStevin made the shortlist in all four categories it submitted for, underlining the successful delivery of these innovative projects.
Lincolnshire Lakes Flood Defence Scheme
Completed in August 2019, Lincolnshire Lakes Flood Defence Scheme was a £13.3m project awarded to VBA (a joint venture comprising VolkerStevin, Boskalis Westminster and SNC-Lavalin’s Atkins business), with Mott MacDonald providing project management and design[PK1] .
Engaged by North Lincolnshire Council, VBA demonstrated engineering excellence in the flood defence sector which resulted in high levels of client satisfaction and a legacy both the team and client can be proud of.
Victory Jetty
These nationally important infrastructure works, contracted to VolkerStevin by the Defence Infrastructure Organisation, enabled Portsmouth Naval Base to act as home port for Britain’s two new £3bn, 65,000t aircraft carriers: HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince of Wales. Using a phased contract approach to accelerate project delivery by 16 months, the team was able to incorporate additional works and still deliver below budget.
Ipswich Tidal Barrier
Ipswich Tidal Barrier was the first new rising sector gate constructed in the UK since the Thames Barrier almost 40 years ago. The VBA team achieved a feat of engineering excellence, installing the 20m wide, 200t steel gate to a tolerance of just 2mm. In all, the expertise of 40 national and international suppliers helped us deliver the project supported by a strong, local workforce of operatives, 80% of which lived locally.
The barrier is a key enabler for the development of land which would otherwise prove challenging to develop, thereby creating up to four thousand additional jobs.
Dover Western Docks Revival
Dover Western Docks Revival (DWDR) comprises £115m of new infrastructure which has transformed Dover’s Port and Waterfront for future generations. The project, delivered by VSBW (VolkerStevin and Boskalis Westminster), was an immense feat of complex engineering delivered by an outstanding team of accomplished professionals.
As well as DWDR contributing £156m to the East Kent economy, VSBW completed the marine infrastructure package in an impressive 28-months, leaving a long-lasting legacy and satisfied client in Dover Harbour Board.
