VolkerStevin Deptford Creek Frontages Flood Risk Management Project Wins Two Awards

Recent

VolkerStevin, together with the Environment Agency and consultants Jacobs, have been presented with the Value Award at the South East Constructing Excellence Awards 2011 for their work on the Deptford Creek Frontages Flood Risk Management Project, London. VolkerStevin has also been presented with a Project Management Award for the Deptford Creek project at the Environment Agency Project Excellence Awards.
For the Value Award, the judges looked for projects on which long-term value has been best achieved. The Deptford Creek project provides long-term value to a substantial community in Greater London through improved flood protection across nine failing water frontages. Over 33,500 households are now protected from an estimated £6.7billion worth of flood damage over the next 100 years. The nine frontages were packaged into a single solution delivered design providing operational efficiencies. The works also demanded innovative construction and concerted community engagement.

VolkerStevin, as part of the project team, received the Project Management Award for exemplary project management at the site where the team worked tirelessly to reduce planned completion time and maximise efficiency. The team ensured that they put in place a system of liaison that started many months prior to construction and continued throughout, militating against possible delays and compensation claims. Joint planning and the understanding of engineering constraints allowed the team to be flexible in their approach and deliver beyond the targets set.

Windsor Young, contracts manager at VolkerStevin, said "VolkerStevin maintained close relationships with those affected by the works and several innovative solutions were implemented to achieve targets and manage site specific constraints.

This included the use of silent piling techniques to reduce noise from traditional piling. A variety of constraints were met and overcome during the construction of the scheme and so I would like to congratulate all those involved."

Helena Henao Fernandez, senior business user at the Environment Agency, said "In times when government organisations are facing financial constraints, it is very important to highlight projects that succeed in delivering benefits whilst optimising funding and resources. One of the Environment Agency's corporate strategies is ‘more for less' and this concept has been applied rigorously throughout the entire life cycle of the Deptford Creek Frontages Flood Risk Management project."
