The final piece of the 160-metre span highway bridge over the River South Tyne in Northumberland was put in to place this week marking a major milestone in the Haydon bridge bypass project.

The final piece of the multi-span viaduct, which crosses both the River South Tyne and the Newcastle-Carlisle railway, was lifted in to place by contractor CVC Highway Solutions using a 600 tonne crawler crane.

The circa £30 million 1.8 mile bypass of the A69 around the small town in Northumberland, commissioned by the Highways Agency, has involved the construction of a further three bridges for the new road, which will see 12,000 vehicles a day using it upon opening in Spring 2009.

Construction of the viaduct for the single carriageway bypass started in June 2007; it has four spans each weighing approximately 200 tonnes and sits on three central bridge piers two of which were constructed in the River South Tyne.

CVC Highway Solutions, the main contractor on the by-pass, is a joint venture between VolkerStevin and Hanson Contracting (formerly Cumbrian Industrials) and their design partner Capita Symonds.
