The project is entitled 'Colwyn Bay Waterfront Phase l' and consists primarily of providing a coastal defence and a raised promenade.

The works include the following key activities:

  • Construction of rock armour revetment and groyne using 80,000tonnes of imported materials
  • Demolition in places of the existing wall and promenade
  • Installation of new curved pile wall
  • Construction of a raised promenade including road, cycleway and car parking tying in with the new sea wall
  • Construction of in-situ and pre-cast reinforced concrete retaining walls
  • Construction of pre-cast concrete steps and a stepped revetment
  • Construction of new slipway
  • Construction of piped culverts and associated headwalls
  • Installation of piled foundations for the proposed Waterfront Sports and Leisure Complex

Third party liaison and stakeholder engagement are key considerations with regard to service protection and/or diversions, access to hotels and residential properties, commercial concerns along the promenade and public open spaces as well as general traffic movements and access to the beach.

Volkerstevin have appointed an experienced Public Liaison Manager to the scheme to lead all Public Liaison and we have set up a Public Information Centre on the beach front where local people can drop in for information relating to the works.

The majority of the scheme was scheduled to be completed in 2011 to ensure that grant funding was not lost.

The coastal protection scheme is part of the larger overall plan for the refurbishment of the promenade and development of waterfront facilities in this area.
