VolkerStevin are currently constructing the Central Felixstowe Coast Protection Works scheme and are transporting the bulk materials using marine barges to reduce the effect on the local roads and the environment.
The new works have a design life of 50 years and comprise the construction of 18 No. rock groynes, a rock revetment, access steps, ramps and beach recharge. The existing fishtail groynes at Cobbold's Point are retained unchanged.
The scheme is phased over two years, 2011 and 2012;
Phase 1 - Groynes 10 to 18, beach recharge and additional temporary rock shoring for the part of the wall at Cobbold's Point.
Phase 2 - Groynes 1 to 9 and the revetment and access way around Cobbold's Point.
The construction of 18 new rock groynes between 35 - 65m in length and between 46 - 62m apart and alterations of the existing groynes at chainages 850 and 1000m.
Timber groyne roots and concrete access steps
20no. timber groyne roots are to be constructed with concrete steps at alternate groynes to ensure safe access to each groyne bay for pedestrians and for plant to undertake future beach management and for emergency egress. In summary these works comprise;
Cobbold's Point revetment
The revetment around Cobbold's Point comprise a 350m long rock armour revetment with a 5m wide concrete access way from the Central Felixstowe promenade to Jacob's Ladder. These works in summary comprise:
80,000m3 of beach recharge is proposed from the south of the first existing rock groyne (chainage 850m) to the southern fish tail groyne (chainage 1400m).
Plant access ramp
The plant access ramp consists of a capped sheet piled access ramp 5.6m wide with a 1:7 slope, granular infill and a 500mm thick concrete deck slab.
A 2m wide concrete Disabled Discrimination Act (DDA) compliant access ramp is to be constructed north from groyne 14, running along the promenade wall at a 1:12 slope with 1.5m landings every 6m.
Navigation markers are to be installed at the seaward ends end of groynes 1, 4, 7, 10 and 18 respectively. The markers and topped with an unlit green beacon supporting a green conical top mark.
