VolkerStevin receives top score in CEEQUAL awards

Recent

VolkerStevin has been presented with an ‘Excellent’ Whole Team Award by CEEQUAL, for the outstanding effort and commitment in environmental and social performances shown on the recently completed Todmorden Flood Alleviation Scheme.

Todmorden

VolkerStevin, working alongside the Environment Agency and CH2M HILL, received one of the highest CEEQUAL scores ever given at 92.4%. CEEQUAL’S chief executive commented that this project ‘was the pinnacle of best practice’.

This three year project saw all parties work collaboratively to protect Todmorden from flash floods created by Walsden Water and the River Calder. The final phase of the project was completed earlier this year and focused on an approx. 1.1km section of the watercourse of Walsden Water, which flows from south to north through the town centre, and included upgrading the existing flood defences, retaining walls and culverts located along this length. Work included:

• Fitting non-return valves to all protruding pipework in the culverts along the watercourse to prevent the back flow of water into the various drainage pipes.
• Removal of the Morrison’s delivery area access bridge, which in a storm event was a major obstacle to the flow of water in Walsden Water, and construction of a new access road.
• Raising the existing flood walls, where required.
• Culvert strengthening and new head walls.
• Removal of the weir structure to reshape the river to create a smoother flow with rock armour installed to protect the walls and offer a natural habitat.
Donald Murray, VolkerStevin project manager, commented on the award: “This project has been a huge success for all. We have built strong relationships with the local community and have helped transform this town so that it is much safer from flash floods. All of which has been recognised by CEEQUAL.”

The team was presented with their award at the CECA Vision North West 2014 annual debate by Professor Roger Venables, chief executive of CEEQUAL who commented: “To achieve a score starting with a ‘9’ represents pinnacle best practice. There was very little the project could do that wasn’t done.”

CEEQUAL

Launched in 2003, CEEQUAL is an evidence-based sustainability assessment which rewards project and contract teams in which clients, designers and contractors go beyond the legal, environmental and social performance in their work. It aims to deliver improved project specification, design and construction of civil engineering works.

Outstanding achievements

Along with receiving an ‘Excellent’ rating from CEEQUAL this project has been awarded a number of prestigious awards including two Considerate Contractor Scheme awards,  International Safety Award from the British Safety Council and the North East Regional Customer Service Award from the Environment Agency.
