VolkerStevin inspires teenagers at Engineering Your Future event

Teenagers from around Preston have been finding out what it is really like to work in engineering.

Civil engineering contractor VolkerStevin attended the event which saw pupils from local schools finding out more about engineering and the career path in to the industry.

As part of the presentation the pupils were tasked with making a structure out of paper to roll a marble down - the winner being the team who took the longest to get the marble to the end of their structure.

Director for subsidiary company VolkerGround Engineering, Chris Thomas who led the presentation, said: “It was a great day and a lot of fun seeing the different ideas all the groups came up with for the marble project. Obviously it would be easy for them to send a marble quickly down a structure, however, taking the longest time made the groups thinks more about their construction.

“It is vital that we inspire young people to get into the industry because it is a fantastic one to be in. The idea of the event is to give young people a better understanding of what we actually do so that they can make informed choices for their future.

“It is a really important time in their lives as they are making the choices which will inform their futures and we need to ensure we have the best talent available in the years to come in our sector. Hopefully we gave them a really good idea of what civil engineering is all about, the sorts of construction projects we work on and all the different roles which are needed on the projects.”

The Engineering Your Future event is a career awareness day run by the Joint Institution Group (NW) with the aim of showing attendees a snapshot of the broad range of opportunities available in the engineering sector.

VolkerStevin is a national contractor with offices in Preston and provides complex engineering solutions to the water, energy, marine infrastructure, flood and coastal protection, land remediation and regeneration and general civil engineering sectors.
