The works, undertaken by VolkerStevin, to upgrade Kirkcaldy sea wall and improve the promenade area on behalf of Fife Council, have been recognised with the Integrated Transport Project of the Year accolade at the Scottish Transport Awards.

Completed in November 2014, and costing just over £9 million, the upgraded sea wall and refurbished promenade now provides a resilient coast defence.

Additional benefits include opportunities for organising festivals and events on the promenade; better conditions for walking and cycling; and improved connections between the town centre and the promenade. It is now an attractive place for local people and visitors to enjoy.

Will Davies, VolkerStevin site agent, commented: “It is great to see that our work is recognised by the Scottish Transport Awards. Throughout the construction period, which started in July 2013, we have been closely liaising with the Kirkcaldy community and received positive feedback and co-operation. We are delighted that we handed back a sea front that everyone involved in the scheme is proud of.”

Ken Gourlay, head of asset, transportation and environmental services, said: “I’m delighted with our success. Fife Council always performs well at this national event. Congratulations to the staff involved in this project, they deserve this recognition for all their hard work.”

Councillor Pat Callaghan, spokesman for transport and environment, added: “Well done to everyone who took part in these awards. In the face of dramatic budget cuts across the Council, our transport team continues providing services that are the best example of their kind in the country.”

The prestigious Scottish Transport Awards bring together the transport community to recognise excellence, innovation and progress across all areas of transport in Scotland.
