Workplace

As a major employer in the construction industry we take seriously our responsibilities to act in line with appropriate legislation, as well as with our own policies which deal specifically with colleagues and the people we come into contact with. We continue to provide a safe working environment in which employees can continue their personal development and are building a culture in which ethical business practice continues to thrive.

Employees

To provide a supportive environment where all our employees have the time and resources to achieve their own ambitions for the good of our clients, the company and themselves.

This is evidenced by our staff turnover of 3.8%, which is below the industry average.

Health, safety and wellbeing

Continually strive to prevent work related injuries and ill-heath of our employees and those working on our behalf, whilst improving their wellbeing.

This is led from the top of our company; for example, VolkerStevin managing director, Rob Coupe, has introduced and promoted initiatives such as 'Making a Difference', which are a catalyst for improving the health and safety behaviour of all of our employees. Since the introduction of the Making a Difference, VolkerStevin has recorded a market leading health and safety performance.

Quality

Maintain clearly defined management systems, interfaces and responsibilities that are understood and accepted by all.

Training

To stimulate the learning and development of our employees.

As a demonstration of our experience of complying with our clients' and our own employment commitments to training we have received a Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) Platinum Award for achieving 90% compliance with CSCS or CPCS trained employees across all our sites.

Our commitment to training extends to the local communities in which we work. For example, on our city centre schemes in Glasgow and Manchester we employed, developed and supported a number of young people from the local community through a two year work based NVQ apprenticeship. This training programme resulted in a recognised construction industry qualification for these apprentices who then progressed on to new sites providing them with full time employment opportunities.

Diversity

To attract employees and volunteers from all cultures and socio-economic groups, in order to develop and retain the skills and talent needed to meet our business objectives.

We recognise and value people's differing backgrounds, knowledge and experiences and we encourage everyone to fulfil their potential through promoting equality for all. Our policies and practices requires that all staff are given equal opportunities within employment and that entry into employment with VolkerStevin and progression within the company will be determined only by personal merit and the application of criteria, which are related to the duties of each particular post. In all cases, ability to perform the job will be the primary consideration.
